When it comes to the top high schools in JoCo, the Blue Valley, Shawnee Mission and Olathe school districts dominate.
Located in east central and southeast Johnson County, the top-rated Blue Valley Unified School District covers 91 square miles of Overland Park, including parts of Leawood and Stilwell. With more than 22,000 students in K-12, Blue Valley’s graduation rate is 97%. The district has earned recognition beyond just appearing on Niche.com’s top-10 list. All five Blue Valley high schools were named to the U.S. News & World Report’s best high schools list and The Washington Post’s most challenging high schools list. And here’s an interesting achievement: Blue Valley students outperformed nearly every educational system in the world tested in math and science on the PISA Exam (The Program for International Student Assessment), following only Shanghai, China.
Of the five high schools in the Shawnee Mission school district, two made Niche.com’s top-10. More than 27,000 students are enrolled in K-12 at Shawnee Mission, and the district serves a diverse student population from 14 cities within northeast Johnson County, Kansas.
Two out of five high schools in the Olathe Unified School District ranked on the top-10 list. With more than 30,000 students in K-12, Olathe the is the second-largest school district in Kansas and one of the biggest in the Kansas City metro area. According to the district’s website, It’s also one of the fastest-growing school districts in the area, and the community it serves has been listed among America’s Top-25 Places to Live and Go to School.
